Locus Tread Prints

LOCUS Architecture brought together Twin Cities cyclists to make their mark and make a difference. Participants bunny-hopped, spun, skidded, and cruised over prints, recording individual tread signatures.

A silent auction of these limited edition Tread Prints will raise money for Full Cycle, a Minneapolis outreach program that provides bicycles and mechanical skill training to homeless and at-risk youth.

See the Tread Prints at the Locus Architecture studios in the Northrup King Building, 1500 Jackson St. NE, Suite 333 in Northeast Minneapolis. You can purchase a Tread Print for $89, or place a bid in the silent auction. Winning bids will be announced during Art-A-Whirl on Saturday, May 16.

Art at Coachella

There were a number of structures and demonstrations at Coachella this year that were pretty interesting.  Here are a few.

Is this Awesome or Horrible?

The D-Box. Apparently, it’s new cinematic technology that allows a viewer to experience a film in a way like never before. This is what the D-Box website has to say about their product.

“D-BOX Technologies designs and manufactures leading edge high-technology motion systems mainly suited to the needs of the entertainment industry. With its unique, patented technology, « D-BOX Motion Code™ » uses motion codes specifically programmed for each film, TV program or video game, which are sent to a motion generating system integrated within either a platform or a seat. The resulting motion is perfectly synchronised with all onscreen action, creating an unmatched realistic immersive experience.”

This seems pretty cool, kind of reminds me of Indiana Jones at Disneyland, but it also hauntingly reminds me of “The Feelies” in Brave New World.  Hopefully these will just be really cool shaking/moving chairs, and it will stop at that.

Stop-Motion Animation

This video is neat because it has classic elements of stop motion, but the artist also throws in some new ways of playing with the art. I really like when he uses his hand to draw with no pen, but instead, stretches the ink with his fingers. Enjoy. (I hope it’s not too much work, but you have to click the link)

Aaron Martinez

My girlfriend and I were out this weekend and we ended up at the Shoppes in Chino Hills. They just happened to be having a small art walk and we were fortunate enough to meet this artist, Aaron Martinez. He works for Element, specifically in their women’s Eden line. He was drawing on location and had a few finished pieces up for sale as well. I really enjoy his line work and the surreal aspect of all of his work. He was also just a really cool guy. RVCA and the ANP

I have been a personal fan of RVCA clothing and art for many years and they definitely have done some good for the local artist.  For over ten years they have supported local artists (musicians included) and have helped to give them a louder voice.  RVCA has done this through the ANP (Artist Network Program).  ANP has a quarterly magazine that features an artists and through RVCA, these artists are allowed to sell shirts, prints, and other types of design, as well as have shows sponsored by the company.  I encourage you to browse the web site and see some of the great work that has been done.
